New research suggests that patients who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
