No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
